Few sequels are as good as the original, but even the ones that don’t surpass usually bring some flair or innovation that make them loveable just the same. Such is the 1996 USA Olympic Basketball Team. Known to some as the Dream II (or the Dream Team III, depending on how you regard the 1994 FIBA squad), the mix of veterans and up-and-comers lack the classic appeal of the ’92 squad, but are still special in their own right. We take a look back at the sneaker highlights of Penny Hardaway, Scottie Pippen, Grant Hill, and more in this Olympic edition of Roster Rewind.

RELATED: Kicks On Court- A Roster Rewind of the “Dream Team”

Worn By: Scottie Pippen & Charles Barkley

Pippen gets the props for the More Uptempos, but Sir Charles also kept them in his rotund rotation. Barkley donned both “Olympic” and icy white makeups of the statement product, as well as navy accented editions of his Air CB34 II and Air CB4 signatures.

Worn By: Penny Hardaway

Penny Hardaway repped his country and his brand, wearing the “Olympic” makeup of the Nike Air Zoom Flight 96 in Atlanta. This pair was a return to Anfernee’s Swoosh roots in a sense, mocking up one of the brand’s marquee guard shoes in a jersey friendly colorway with number tagging. There were few complaints about these kicks, with many considering them a classic. With that said, can you imagine a USA version of the Penny 1 or Penny 2?

Worn By: Shaquille O’Neal

While the Diesel took his promo pics in the ever-popular Shaqnosis, his gold medal came in the Reebok Preacher Ice. This pair was loaded with Hexalite cushioning and even donned a translucent sole. Perhaps a precursor to the Question?

Worn By: Grant Hill

If numbers don’t lie, then Grant Hill was the most popular player in the ATL. Coming off consecutive seasons as the leading vote getter for the All-Star Game, the golden boy took his talents to Team USA, leading the team in steals and putting up just under ten points a game. Hill kept his kicks in line with regular season and ASG tones, calling for more white on this patriotic pair.

Worn By Reggie Miller & Gary Payton

Big bubbles took a backseat on the Nike Air Much Uptempo. Worn by perimeter players GP and Reggie, the kicks were a calmed down version of the iconic Airs endorsed by Pippen. These shoes were popular upon introduction, but have failed to have the retro push of their bulky brethren.

Worn By: David Robinson

Slimming down from Barcelona’s Ballistic Forces, the Nike Air Modify Force sported flag detail with a team-first design. The Admiral rocked a two-tone pair at media day, but often sported the strapped up version during play.

Worn By: Charles Barkley

All Charles Barkley did in Atlanta was lead the USA in scoring and rebounds en route to an 8-0 record and Olympic gold. Not bad for a guy that also shot 81.6% from the field. While much of this play took place in the Air More Uptempo and Air CB34 II, it eventually segued into the introduction of his CB4 signature.

Images via Mis Zapas, SI Vault, Bleacher Report, Nike Talk, Getty Images, Sneaker Files, & USAB

[2
1225551,1225735

2":"type-post

Nike Air More Uptempo
