Check back next Wednesday for the second installment of our Black History Month Spotlight.

Growing Up on the South Side of Chicago

“I grew up on the south side of Chicago. I had a typical inner-city childhood. I saw a lot of things that were good, and I saw a lot of things that were bad. At the end of it all, I discovered myself through creativity and sports. I always tried to figure out how to merge my two passions together. I didn?t know what that was because I didn?t necessarily have people in my community who wanted to be industrial designers, let alone footwear designers. So, all I could think of growing up was becoming an engineer. That?s kind of what the career path is when you want to make stuff. So, I came down the path of trying to figure out what was the best place for me to land in terms of engineering education, and also where I can manifest the version of myself that I knew I could be.”

The Beginning of a Journey

“I looked up a bunch of schools that had great design programs or engineering programs. It was a few universities in the south and some up north. I had a couple of setbacks while I was in high school in terms of things that were going on around my community, so we moved from where we were living at the time to the south suburbs. So, I spent my senior year in a new high school. I didn?t know anybody, but I built a strong rapport with my track and field coach. During the school hours, I worked in the athletic department and I would sit with him and he would see me sketch shoes. He finally asked me, ?What are you doing?? I told him that I was practicing, and that I wanted to be a footwear designer.”

“My dream was to design Jordans. Growing up where I grew up, it?s not like I had a lot of access to the product, so I would draw them and put them in my pocket to be apart of the Jordan movement. I figured if I at least had an image of it and it was close to me, then I was still connected to the brand. The brand helped me understand that I could be more than what society told me I could be as a young, black man in the city. I wasn?t going to be Michael Jordan. He?s already himself. I knew that I could be the Michael Jordan of whatever industry I went into, and ultimately be the first Jason Mayden and not the next anybody.”

The Big Break

“Out of the all the people I could have been placed next to in the dorms, I get placed next to Chiih-Wei Lee and his girlfriend, which is now his wife. They both interned at Nike. I just picked their brains and asked them how they got the internship at Nike. He was like, ?Nike is cool, but they only talk about shoes and sports?. I was like, ?Give me the info. That?s all I want to talk about is shoes and sports?. He gave me the info, and I reached out. I sent them my info and wrote a letter or an email everyday. In my junior year, I was a resident?s assistant and I had a hilarious freshman roommate that played Legos and ate shrimp. I sent my portfolio to Nike right before the Christmas break, and I told my roommate to not answer the phone if he sees a 503 area code because that would be Nike.”

“I come back from Christmas break and everybody on my floor is congratulating me about something that I knew nothing about. I see balloons and Nike colored stuff and Swooshes, so I?m like, ?What is going on?? Then, everybody tells me I got the Nike internship, but nobody called me, so I didn?t believe it. I go to my room and my roommate looks up and says, ?Oh by the way, they called?. At the time, I?m thinking should I go over and kick this dude?s Lego stand over, or do I check the voicemail and see what happened? I checked the voicemail, and it was true. They told me my internship was going to be with basketball. I was excited. I always wanted to be in Jordan basketball, and this was the closest thing to Jordan.”

Jordan Brand’s First

“Around March, I get another call from them while I was at a movie theater in Detroit watching some corny, horror movie. He tells me; ‘Unfortunately, Nike Basketball doesn?t have the budget to bring you in as an intern, but there is a new part of the company that?s turning into a brand and they?re trying to extend. They thought it would be cool to have you as their first ever intern.’ Then he asked me if I would be interested in interning at Jordan Brand. I started screaming in the middle of the movie theater, and the movie theater clears out. In Detroit, when a person screams in the middle of a dark, crowded movie theater, no one asks questions. They just get up and leave. I was thanking God, and I was mad excited. I couldn?t believe it. I was Jordan Brand?s first intern. I later found out that I was Nike?s first black design intern that went to a design school.”

Meeting MJ and the Jordan Brand Team

“I get there, meet MJ and tell him my story, and he was like, ?How the hell did you end up in Oregon coming from the Southside of Chicago?? I had the great fortune of working with some brilliant people over there that coached and mentored me and also advocated on my behalf. I ended up graduating school with a job offer from Nike. I came back and worked in training for a couple of years, specifically on some stuff for Michael Vick and helped E. Scott Morris with some of his product. I also worked on the Nike Monarch, a shoe that wasn?t sexy, but it was a shoe that made a hell of a lot of money for the company. That was a great learning experience. It was a humbling experience.”

Click the next page to find out about Jason Mayden’s current role at Nike, his favorite African American sports moments, future Nike projects and the meaning of Black History Month.

Snkrs Day: What is your specific role/job title at Nike currently?

Jason Mayden: I?m the Director of Innovation for Digital Sports. We just launched the Nike+ FuelBand. That?s the world that I?m in now. In the director role, I?m always helping to set strategies and set a direction with the rest of the leadership team. At the core of it, it?s really about mentorship, coaching and making sure the employees underneath me get proper guidance and advice. I?m always looking out for the person who can take my job someday.

Jason Mayden holding up his creation, the Jordan CP3.II

Snkrs Day: What is the best part about working with professional athletes and being responsible for their respective performance wear?

Jason Mayden: The best part is the ability to dream. The way I work with the athletes is a bit different from how others work with them. I really spend time trying to have them know me rather than me trying to know them. They have so many people trying to get into their world, and they have enough friends. What they need are people to do their jobs, execute and give them the best product on court. I just do my job. I?m not a person that?s partying and kicking it. What they see from me is consistency, my work ethic, my family values, my faith and the fact that I ?under-promise? and ?over-deliver?. I don?t try to force a friendship. Sometimes it?s just a work relationship and sometimes we?re friends. In the best cases, we?re friends and co-workers like the relationship I have with Chris Paul. Even though I?m not with Jordan Brand now, we still talk to this day. Once the trust is there, it?s a blessing.

Snkrs Day: Personally, what has been your biggest accomplishment so far in this industry?

Jason Mayden: It?s the amount of people I?ve been able to help get in this industry. I can?t take credit for anything I?ve done because people have given me opportunities and God has blessed me. I feel proud of the fact that I?m not a person that?s waiting till I get to the top to reach my hand back and help. I?m doing it along the way. I?m proud of all the young folks, minorities and women who have gotten into this industry because we fought or advocated on their behalf and have helped them succeed. I would say that matters to me more than the projects I?ve worked on.

Snkrs Day: Who are your top five, favorite African American athletes and why?

Jason Mayden: Michael Jordan ? What I liked about him was his confidence, man. It wasn?t the athleticism. It was the way he took the court. It was the way he embraced being a black man. He didn?t have to talk about it. Everybody saw it. MJ cares, too. When I went away to Stanford, he was one of the first ones to comment on me getting into Stanford. He encouraged me to keep going and supported me. He comes from a great family with great values.

Jim Brown ? When he played lacrosse, he redefined that game to the point where they had to implement rules. I also always think of that image of Bill Russell, Jim Brown and Muhammad Ali in Harlem. You know, when Muhammad Ali declared that he wasn?t going into the military draft because of religious reasons. The fact that Jim Brown was the first to throw his hands up and say, ?Look, I?m standing by my brother? was big to me.

Nike+ FuelBandMuhammad Ali ? He ran his mouth a lot, which I didn?t like, but I was a damn big fan of how skillful he was. People often talk about his punching power, his combos and the rope-a-dope, but what they fail to really give him credit on was his methodical thinking. Ali broke people down into small chunks. He understood the pace and rhythm of a fight. He optimized his abilities against that rhythm, more so than any other athlete that I?ve ever seen.

Jesse Owens ? I have archival photos of Jesse that I bought off of eBay. Jesse Owens is a midwestern guy. I like him because of what he did in the Olympics in front of Hitler. Like, how dare he do what he did in front of Hitler at the Olympics? He showed up at a time where black men couldn?t even vote, and he showed up and showed out. Not only did he destroy everyone in track and field, but he also shattered world records.

Joe Louis ? Having spent time in Detroit and going past that Joe Louis fist downtown, it reminds you of the strength of that man. He held the city on his back. I still remember hearing stories about what it was like to be in Chicago and Harlem as a black person when he won the World Heavyweight Championship. It was on the radio and people were dancing in the streets and crying. That was a big moment.

With all five of those characters, it was something about the way they fought through adversity and stereotypes. That just amplifies the black race.

Snkrs Day: What was your most vivid sport moment growing up in Chicago?

Jason Mayden: When Bo Jackson ran over Brian Bosworth at the goal line. Man, I remember punching a hole in the drywall of my basement when I saw that. I was so charged that I went straight to the wall and just punched it. He basically ended Brian Bosworth?s career in that one moment.

This one will hurt, but I still remember when John Starks went baseline on MJ and Horace Grant left handed. He turned that corner and just banged on them. That broke my heart, but I have to put it out there.

Muhammad Ali announcing his refusal to fight in Vietnam

Snkrs Day: What was the most monumental sneaker moment you had growing up?

Jason Mayden: In third grade, a girl I knew had the ?Military Blue? 4s on. I?ll never forget it. She had on a denim skirt, a blue top, her hair was in a bun with a blow pop in it and she had on the ?Military Blue? 4s. It was something about those 4s. I saved up money, and I cut grass to get those. When I finally got them, somebody stole them. It broke my heart. A few years later, when I became an adult, I met Gabriel Urist, and he made me the first Air Jordan 4 charm. From there, he took off and just started killing it. I?m loyal to Gabe for that reason. He?s a good guy.

Snkrs Day: What is the biggest, most exciting project that you’re currently working on as Nike’s Director of Innovation for Digital Sports?

Jason Mayden: I?m doing a sponsored project with CCS, my undergrad. We?re doing something for the Sneaker Ball event, which is a party Nike throws every February as a culminating event for our efforts around Black History Month. I came on board this year to manage that event with a team of three other people, and we?re going to do something like I did for Doernbecher. We?re doing that for Big Brothers/Big Sisters to raise awareness around the lack of mentors for black children.

We?re trying to create a product line that features some exclusive Destroyer jackets and others things to be auctioned off on February 24th and at NIKETOWN, we will have a big party. All proceeds will go towards Big Brothers/Big Sisters to try to eliminate the lack of black mentorship. I want to encourage as many people as possible to not wait until you have your own kid because these children are our children. Someone needs to be there for them, and it needs to be us.

Snkrs Day: What does Black History Month particularly mean to you?

Jason Mayden: I celebrate black history everyday, so I don?t even focus on February. February is a great marketing tool, but I try to focus on it 365. I feel like we?re living black history everyday. Every time you do something, as a black person, you have the potential to be the first. You can be the first black President or you can be the first person in your family to get a college degree. I look at black history as everybody?s history. It shouldn?t be completely confined to the black culture. It?s part of the fabric of what America is.

When we talk about black history, we have to talk about America?s history, and understand our significance. Also, we need to know our global history and the contributions of Africans and black people in general. It?s amazing. It?s people you?ve never met that died for you to be here. It?s not history because it?s still alive. History is something that happened. It needs to be ?Black Current Month? or something because our accomplishments aren?t just in the past. We?re creating new ones, and I?m sure there will be even more to talk about.

John Starks dunking on Michael Jordan and Horace GrantSnkrs Day: What advice would you offer to someone wanting to follow your career path?

Jason Mayden: Be vocal about it and dream out loud. The difference between a dream and a goal is a timeline. If you dream out loud, people will hold you accountable to your dreams and then you have to put some action behind your words. Dream out loud, and tell people what you want to do. Don?t be afraid to approach folks. If you see a designer, reach out to him. If you have someone?s Facebook, hit them up. Put yourself out there. Don?t be afraid to ask questions. Don?t ask for free product, hook-ups and jobs, but ask for advice and feedback. Even to this day, I reach out to folks I don?t know. I?ll hit someone in a heartbeat from Microsoft, Google, Pepsi or EA Sports and just say, ?I?m learning, and I want to know more about what you do?.

Always seek mentors, but seek advocates as well. Dream out loud and reach out to folks. That?s my words of wisdom.
