We are four days away from one of the biggest retro releases of 2011 in the form of the Black/Cement Air Jordan 3. Originally released in 1988, the Air Jordan 3 Black/Cement has retroed three times (1994, 2001, 2008), and the fourth retro release will take place on Black Friday. Although it is pretty much the same shoe as the 2008 Countdown Pack version, there are a few minute differences our Snkrs Day staff noticed after examining the two closely. Take a look at our 11 Differences Between the 2008 & 2011 Black/Cement Air Jordan 3s feature, and let us know which pair interests you the most.

RELATED😕 Air Jordan 3 “True Blue” 2001 vs. 2009 Comparison | Air Jordan 3 Black/Cement New Photos (All Sizes)

If you examine the tongue closely, you will see that the 2008 version of the “Black Cement” Air Jordan 3 possesses smaller perforations than those seen on the upcoming 2011 pair. The perforations are more compacted and closer to one another, whereas on the 2011 version, the perforations are noticeably bigger and spaced out.

Color is a constant change that we have noticed on today’s retros in comparison with the retros of the early 2000s and ’90s. The 2011 version?s shade of Varsity Red is noticeably darker and is closer to a Crimson tone. You can definitely notice a difference on the Jumpman logo and the tongue border, two attributes that are much brighter on the 2008 version.

This time around, Jordan Brand kept the product tag placement more in tune with the majority of the sneakers we own today. The 2011 version features the product tag on the inner side of the tongue. Contrarily, Jordan Brand incorporated the product tag on the inner lateral side of the 2008 pair.

Notice how we previously pointed out the difference in red shades on each retro. The same applies with the grey elephant print on each pair. The 2008 version features a brighter red in regards to the accents; however, it contains darker elephant prints hints. The 2011 version features an inverse color correlation by bearing a darker red accent color and a lighter shade of grey on the elephant print sections.

The insole graphic is undoubtedly one of the biggest differences between the two. The Air Jordan 3/20 Countdown Pack released in 2008 as part of the 23-year anniversary of Jordan sneakers; therefore, ‘XXIII’ (23) is placed in between ‘1985’ and ‘2008’ on a stitched tag. The soon-to-be-released 2011 version is much simpler in regards to the insole, as it features a grey base and a red Jumpman logo.

We also noticed that the 2011 version is taller and bulkier than the Countdown Pack pair. Specifically, the ankle level is raised higher on the 2011 version, and the tongue rests higher at its peak. The tongue is more wide than tall on the 2008 version. Also, you can see that the 2008 version is a much more sleeker and compacted design in the picture above.

It is not abnormal to see somebody skating while rocking the Air Jordan 3 or something similar to this iconic model these days. However, the 2008 version probably features more skate appeal with its aforementioned sleeker design and wide tongue. It also owns more tongue padding on the inner side than that seen on the 2011 version. The 2011 version’s slim tongue falls in line with a lot of the performance basketball silhouettes that feature thin tongues on the current market (Hyperdunk 2011, Hyperfuse 2011). This may be a good thing considering we continue to see more and more retros on the hardwood these days.

There is also an extremely small difference in the mudguard shape. Although both retros have a dip at the side panel area, the 2008 version’s mudguard border is more parallel throughout the bottom half of the shoe. The dip on the 2011 version is a tad bit deeper causing the mudguard to be closer to the midsole in that particular area.

Jordan Brand should never alter any materials or textures on the Air Jordan 3 considering it is, and always will be a beloved sneaker. Therefore, the leather upper and the cement print hints are all intact and parallel to the OG pair. The only ‘finish’ difference that is noticeable is seen on the heel section of the midsole. Notice how the latest version possesses a matte layer (truer to the OGs) on the lower portion of the heel. The 2008 version is much smoother and contains no added details. Do you prefer the glossy layer or the smoother finish seen on the 2008 pair?

Earlier, we stated that 2008’s pair contained thicker tongue padding. However, the ankle padding is ironically thicker on the 2011 version, specifically around the rim of the collar.

The box packaging has been different on all four Air Jordan 3 Black/Cement releases so far. Of course, the 2008 release is arguably the most distinctive of the four considering it was packaged with the Air Jordan XX and featured various tribute attributes for the 23-year anniversary of Air Jordans. The 2011 version’s packaging is not too shabby either. Black cement print smothers the entire box, while the lid is colored in black with various Varsity Red Jordan Brand branding.

Now that you have seen our 11 Differences Between the 2008 & 2011 “Black Cement” Air Jordan 3s feature in its entirety, let us know which version interests you the most in our voting poll below.

[polldaddy poll=5690070]

[1232702,3,1225574
1225505,1225452,1225575

2":"type-post

Perforations

Air Jordan 3 “Black Cement” 2008 (left) vs?Air Jordan 3 “Black Cement” 2011 (right) – Perforation
