Gary: “I wish these had been packaged with some Air Ships in similar colours for true ?Banned? authenticity. I have no idea as to whether it’s an age or common sense thing, but I’m increasingly attracted to the quality control aspect of shoes. It?s probably the years catching up on me. I hate picking something up and it looking unwearable after three wears. I’m not even fussy about beat looking footwear, but on principal shoes should have some longevity. I wrote these off, assuming that they’d be pleather, but they’re leather ? my friend and associate Mr. Mubi Ali hooked me up with a pair recently and while they’re not invincible feeling like the 1985 editions, these still look set to look better with subsequent wears. In an ideal world, every Jordan retro would be executed this well. Creases give this one character rather than rendering it unwearable.”

New Balance 998

Gary: “In 1993 I was too busy chasing after Jordans, Barkleys and garish Air Raid IIs to opt for something this sublime. Now I can appreciate the New Balance 998 for that shape and build. They’re a beautiful shoe and the shape is just on point. The suede and fit is perfect…the USA factory is putting out some of the best shoes in the amassed stacks around me these days. I’ve been a fan of the Asian-made 999s for a minute but these are just a next level sneaker in terms of quality. New Balance seems to be gathering disciples at the moment. As long as they keep this kind of shoe coming, I can’t see that market growth subsiding.”

Crooked Tongues x New Balance 1500 Black/Orange

Gary: “I’m not sample size in many brands, but I’m sample size in Nike Running and New Balance. I’ve been wearing these for a few weeks. Originally I was drawn to the white and limes, because of their associations with the original CT 576 that Russell gave me when I went for a job interview at Crooked Tongues, but these black and oranges are serious. Comfortable and well made…it’s good to rep for the UK when it comes to manufacture and 1500s have got that European running shoe following, plus those old Lo-Life associations. I love wearing these. They’re a worthy successor to my favourite Crooked Tongues collaboration ever.”

Supreme x Vans Mike Carroll

Gary:?”The best releases just bring back some happy memories and the Vans Mike Carroll captures a mid ’90s moment in skate history. Mike wore plenty of Half Cabs so it always made sense that his signature shoe was cut from the same cloth with a mixture of basic looks and a few cues from tech sneakers of the time. As with the Banned 1s, I missed out on these when they dropped, so salutes to Charlie at Vans for the hookup. This is a real nod from Supreme to the attitude that built the store, even if Carroll?s an SF dude and that Scotchlite tongue in a Jordan V style is a classy touch ? as is the brown suede. And like the Jordan V, the Mike Carroll is a shoe that causes some flashbacks for passers-by. Jordan isn?t the only Mike that people worship. Normally In the UK most good stuff doesn’t cause much commotion on the streets, but there’s plenty of former sneaker lovers who get hyped at the sight of the V and there’s more ex-skaters out there than people would expect.”

Nike Lava Dome Grey/Navy

Gary: “The Nike Lava Dome is a perfect shoe that captures the similarities in the innate crappiness of both Portland and London’s weather systems. I’m always staggered that these were originally released around 1981, because the shape feels akin to the kind of shoes that dropped a decade later. Lava Domes always feel uncomfortable for a short while until they break in and become one of the most comfortable shoes ever. Approach retros without the groundbreaking GORE-TEX lining seem a little redundant whereas the addition of Zoom Air to the Lava Dome makes it even better. That suede gets better with every wear, the Georgetown makeup is killer ? a good sequel to the old beige and navys too ? and I literally wore these for two months straight when I got them. That’s a testament to the ‘great’ British summertime.”

[618
1204286,1225742

2":"type-post
