Although Memorial Day sees the average American laying by the pool, taking walks through the park, cooking on the grill and/or enjoying family time, the real focus of today should pinpoint our U.S. Service Members. We must take time out to recognize those who died while protecting our country in the military service. Likewise, we should honor and support our current military members because these privileges that we enjoy come with great sacrifice.

To coincide with Memorial Day, we have highlighted nine military members that are not ashamed to proclaim their fetish for sneakers. These 10 honorable members, who have or still continue to serve, reveal photos of their extensive sneaker collections and answer questions about their top five sneakers of all time, the best part of serving and collecting, and what shoe they think represents their respective military branch.

Take a look at our Memorial Day Spotlight: Soldiers Share Their Passion for Sneakers.

Name: Bobby Walthour

Branch: Army

Rank: E-4

Hometown: Savannah, Ga.

Currently stationed in: Medically Retired

Years in the service: 9.5

How long have you been collecting sneakers and how many do you have? 12 years. 250+ pairs.

Top five sneakers of all-time:

1. Jordan III Black/Cement OG

2. Jordan XIII Playoffs

3. Nike Foamposite Eggplant

4. Converse AllStar always classic.

5. Nike Air Max Penny 1

What sneaker started you collecting shoes? Probably the New Balance 574 back in high school.

What is the next shoe you plan to grab? Jordan III True Blue

What is your favorite sneaker in your closet? Jordan 6/11 DMP never wore them though. I wear Jordan 9’s & 13’s a few times a week.

If you had to pick one shoe to represent your military branch, what would it be and why? Cool grey Jordan 11 OG because they really match well with the work out gear and a lot of people slept on them.

What is the worst part of trying to collect shoes and serve at the same time? I lost a lot of shoes during deployments. Family doesn’t appreciate the sneaker addiction.

Do/did you ever try to work sneakers into your military-assigned attire? I wore Jordan 16’s Black/Red through basic training in 2001.

What?s the best part of being in the Armed Forces? Travel was definitely a plus & a consistent salary to support sneaker release dates.

Since you?ve been all around the world, what?s your favorite sneaker store? Premium Goods & Dave’s Quality Meat in NY.

If you could design a sneaker dedicated to you particular branch, what shoe would you use and how would you create it (colors, materials)? Real leather is a must. Black with grey trim to match the army’s pt uniforms. I’d maybe add some kind of patent leather just for easy clean up. It would probably be an all black Jordan 11.

Do you have any memorable shoe-related stories? I skipped work and headed to the mall to buy the Jordan XVI their first release only to get robbed for them 2hrs later at the movie theater. I ended up getting another pair and still have extra wraps to this day.

Jacob Barnhart

United States Marine Corps

Corporal

Walla Walla, Washington

Honorable Discharge in 2003

4 1/2 years Active Duty

“I proudly served our great country after graduating from high school in 1998. I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps with many questions, doubts, fears and much excitement. I served 4 1/2 proud years. Those years were years I will never forget. From the men I stood beside to the men I knew personally that were lost in war. My life was changed dramatically in those 4 1/2 years and I came out of the Marine Corps with my head up high and the attitude of Never Quit. I enrolled in college and graduated from Seattle University in 2007. The GI Bill payed my way though school. I am currently 31, and a Associate Financial Advisor for Ameriprise.

After my Honorable Discharge from the Marine Corps I got a job and started to prepare myself for college. I had never had a dime of my own to spend but had always had a shoe obsession. I started to collect. It started with Nike and went from there. At one point my junior year of college I had 114 pairs of random shoes. Mainly Nike’s and Jordan’s. Upon graduation I took a job with Ameriprise and had to move. 114 pairs of shoes was a lot to move. EBAY happened. I had to part with many shoes that I loved but managed to hold on to some. I now have a random collection that I hardly touch. They sit in my home and I look at them every day. Its a part of me that some will never understand. I will buy shoes here and there and still pick up some Jordan’s if its a Retro.”

How long have you been collecting sneakers and how many do you have? I have been collecting sneakers since 2003. After selling over 75 pair I now have about 40+ pairs

Top five sneakers of all-time:

Nike Air Max 95 Neon

AIr Jordan V Fire Red

AIr Jordan III Cements

Nike Air Force Max Black and Grey

AIr Jordan 11 Space Jam

What sneaker started you collecting shoes? I can’t say I have one particular sneaker that got me into collecting. I just think its a matter of loving shoes

What is the next shoe you plan to grab? I will be picking up the Jordan True Blue IIIs.

What is your favorite sneaker in your closet? I would have to say the Air Jordan V Fire Red. I had the OG’s as a child when I finally convinced my dad to buy them for me. The gym I used to play basketball in was so dirty I used to slide around everywhere when trying to stop with the clear icy sole! When they were re-released as a retro I was SO PUMPED. I have not even worn the pair I bought.

If you had to pick one shoe to represent your military branch, what would it be and why? I would say the Air Jordan Space Jam would represent the line of work I did in the Marine Corps. Our Motto was Swift, Silent and Deadly. This shoe does that justice.

What is the worst part of trying to collect shoes and serve at the same time? I had a few pair here and there when I was enlisted but did not really start collecting till I got out. I would venture to say the travel all over the world would make it tough to lock down a pair on release dates in the US

Do/did you ever try to work sneakers into your military-assigned attire? I never attempted this. It was a big NO NO.

What?s the best part of being in the Armed Forces? Best part of being in the Marine Corps was the travel, the experiences and overall and by far the most important was the bonds I made with people (fellow Marines and also those who we helped in need).

Since you?ve been all around the world, what?s your favorite sneaker store? I have been all around the world (literally) and I would still argue that Goods in Seattle is one of my favorite shops. I am also a big fan of Wish in Atlanta.

If you could design a sneaker dedicated to you particular branch, what shoe would you use and how would you create it (colors, materials)? I think Nike SB Brian Anderson Camo Dunk Hi with Orange Laces pretty much nailed what I would envision in a shoes for the Military. Maybe take the Orange laces out and throw in some Black!

Do you have any memorable shoe-related stories? Again, I think the one story that sticks out in my mind is the childhood story of wanting the Air Jordan V Fire Reds so bad and finally convincing my dad to buy them. Sliding all around the gym drove me nuts but I knew I had “cool” shoes. I was so thrilled to see these retro and hold them very close.

Name: Angela Daniels

Branch: US Navy

Rank: E-3/ABE

Hometown: Chicago

Currently stationed in: Pensacola,FL

Years in the service: 6 months

How long have you been collecting sneakers and how many do you have? 4 years and well over a hundred.

What is the next shoe you plan to grab? Questlove Nike dunk

What is your favorite sneaker in your closet? Red and black SB Dunk High

If you had to pick one shoe to represent your military branch, what would it be and why? I think the Nike ACG boot represents the US Navy very well. It’s a versatile boot. It can be used to wear while working or you can rock them with a nice outfit and chill. The Navy is versatile too. We do more than travel around the world on a ship.

What is the worst part of trying to collect shoes and serve at the same time? When you are stationed on a ship you don’t have anywhere to store them.

Do/did you ever try to work sneakers into your military-assigned attire? No, but it would be nice if Nike had some steel toed boots so I could rock them with my uniform everyday.

What?s the best part of being in the Armed Forces? The military discount at some sneaker stores.

Since you?ve been all around the world, what?s your favorite sneaker store? I haven’t been around the world yet so my favorite sneaker store so far is the Nike Factory Store in Chicago. They always have a nice collection of Nike Blazers,Dunks and Jordans.

If you could design a sneaker dedicated to you particular branch, what shoe would you use and how would you create it (colors, materials)? I would design a Nike ACG boot. It would be all black leather and have the American flag on the back heel of both shoes and on the side of the right boot I would have the US Navy core values of honor, courage and commitment.

Name: Eddie Nelson

Branch: US NAVY

Rank: HM2/E5

Hometown: Memphis, TN

Currently stationed in: Naval Undersea Medicine Institute at Naval Submarine Base Groton, CT

Years in the service: 5 years, 6 months.

How long have you been collecting sneakers and how many do you have? I started collecting sneakers as a hobby around 4 years ago, but I got really hard into it last summer. I think I have around 50 pair.

Top five sneakers of all-time:

1. Nike Air Jordan 3 Black Cement (the illest colorway Nike has ever produced.)

2. Nike Air Yeezy (The first sneaker Nike ever collabed on with a non-athlete. Forget the hype, this sneaker is one of the freshest sneakers ever worn. You know when you see somebody wearing it, it makes a statement.)

3. New Balance MT580 x Burn Rubber (if anybody out there is selling this in a 10, let me know!)

4. Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Lo (Classics never die.)

5. Nike Air Jordan 1 “Banned” (I know this is new, but I spent the past 2 weeks calling every Nike Factory store in the country trying to track down a pair. JB, if you’re reading this, you’re breaking my heart with this release.)

What sneaker started you collecting shoes? When I was younger, we were pretty poor. We weren’t going hungry or anything like that, but we just didn’t have the money to go spend on sneakers. I grew up wearing Riddell and other D-list joints from Wal-Mart and K-Mart. I used to see kids at school wearing all the hottest Jordans and other kicks and I was so jealous. The Jordan 3 white and black cements were a childhood dream of mine. Those sneakers are really what set me off, I think.

What is the next shoe you plan to grab? True Blues! And the Kobe VI Italian Camo if I can find it.

What is your favorite sneaker in your closet? 2001 Jordan 3 black cements (no Jumpman on the heel!) or my Air Yeezy net/net colorway.

If you had to pick one shoe to represent your military branch, what would it be and why? Nike SB Dunk Hi “Born in the USA.” I think it pretty much speaks for itself.

What is the worst part of trying to collect shoes and serve at the same time? Getting stationed somewhere where there are NO sneaker shops. There is nothing where I live now. Also, being deployed or out of the country whenever a drop happens. It’s hard to pick up heat for retail price when you live in Cuba.

Do/did you ever try to work sneakers into your military-assigned attire? No way. That would never fly.

What?s the best part of being in the Armed Forces? The travel can’t be beat. Also, the appreciation of the rest of the country is awesome. I just spent some time in New York for fleet week. That city goes off for us and it’s really great to know that people appreciate what we do for them. It makes al of the sacrifices worth it.

Since you?ve been all around the world, what?s your favorite sneaker store? Gotta plug my boy Nate at Sole Brothers n Virginia Beach. Always get the hottest SB’s.

If you could design a sneaker dedicated to you particular branch, what shoe would you use and how would you create it (colors, materials)? I was thinking about this whenever I saw the Wolf Grey 5 photos for the first time. That shoe looks like a Naval ship, right down to the 23 on the side. I think with a little more style, you could turn that shoe into a legit Navy sneaker.

Do you have any memorable shoe-related stories? I guess it’s all one big story. Whether I was tracking down my favorite colorway, the most limited heat, or just picking up my favorite general release, it’s something I have grown to love. I have gone from a little dude picking his nose wearing Wal-Mart velcros, to a grown man who saves lives, defends freedom, and wears Air Yeezy’s. I got nothing to complain about.

Name: Seth Phelps

Branch: Navy

Rank: E-6, Intel Specialist First Class

Hometown: Morgantown, KY

Currently stationed in: Fredericksburg, VA

Years in the service: 6

“My name is Seth Phelps, and I am a Petty Officer First Class (E-6) Intelligence Specialist in the United States Navy. I have been in for a little over 6 years now, and truly love serving my country. I am currently stationed in Fredericksburg, VA, about an hour south of DC. I am also a die-hard sneaker fan. I first got into sneakers because I was a huge Michael Jordan fan as a kid. I still vividly remember begging my mom to get the new Jordans, also on the first day they came out of course! I still collect and rock primarily Jordans, but I do have some Kobes, Pennys, and Air Force Ones also. My all-time favorite sneaker is the Space Jam Jordan 11 (big surprise) but the Playoff 12s are a close 2nd. I have also included a shot of my “Wall Of Sneakers” as my wife calls it, and my 3 most beloved sneakers in my collection (I didn’t include individual shots of the Space Jams since they are still so common right now from dropping in 2009). The 3 individual shots are of the limited edition Nike Air Zoom Vick III Laser (I’m also the world’s biggest Falcons fan), the Air Jordan 2011 Year of the Rabbit, and the Playoff 12s.”

How long have you been collecting sneakers and how many do you have? I’ve been collecting on and off my whole life, currently have around 30 pairs.

Top five sneakers of all-time:

1. Space Jam Air Jordan 11

2. Playoff Air Jordan 12

3. Air Zoom Vick 3 Laser

4. White/Black Air Jordan 13

5. White/Navy Air Jordan 16

What sneaker started you collecting shoes? White & Red Air Jordan 6 when I was 6 years old. 1st pair of Jordans I ever had, been wearing them ever since.

What is the next shoe you plan to grab? I’m picking up the True Blue 3s next weekend, and after that I am going to find some OG deadstock white & black Air Jordan 13s.

What is your favorite sneaker in your closet? I love both my 2000 & 2009 edition Space Jams, but I’d have to go with my Vick 3 Lasers because I am a die-hard Atlanta Falcons fan and they are so much more hard to find. I’ve only worn them twice, once to a Virginia state-wide Madden tournament back in 2005, and to the Falcons-Saints Monday Night Football game in Atlanta this past December.

If you had to pick one shoe to represent your military branch, what would it be and why? Jordan 12 because they are probably the toughest, most durable, and versatile shoe out of all the Air Jordans.

What is the worst part of trying to collect shoes and serve at the same time? The worst part is being on deployment overseas when new releases are coming out. I was on deployment most of late-2007 and early-2008 when the Jordan Countdown Packs were coming out and there wasn’t really any way to get those online without paying double the box price.

Do/did you ever try to work sneakers into your military-assigned attire? Well we can’t really wear sneakers with our normal uniforms, but anytime we play basketball during command fitness sessions I am always in some Kobe 5s.

What?s the best part of being in the Armed Forces? Waking up every morning and knowing that you are really making a difference when you go to work.

Since you?ve been all around the world, what?s your favorite sneaker store? I really haven’t seen too many really good overseas sneakers stores. I’ve been to alot of good sneaker boutiques in the states, but at the end of the day I have copped more shoes from Foot Locker than anywhere else so I gotta give love to the old favorite.

If you could design a sneaker dedicated to you particular branch, what shoe would you use and how would you create it (colors, materials)? I’d go with a Jordan 11 with navy-blue on the patent leather, white upper like the Concords, an iced sole with gold flakes like the Air Jordan 2011 Year of the Rabbit sole, and gold accents everywhere else. And I’d put a 75 on the back instead of 23 since the Navy was started in 1775.

Do you have any memorable shoe-related stories? Well the one that I always think back of was in November 96, I turned 12 the same day that the Air Jordan 12s released so of course they were all I wanted for my birthday. We were visiting relatives in San Antonio, Tx so me and my Mom woke up early to go and try to find a pair of the new Js. We spent all day going to I think every mall in San Antonio. Every place was either sold out or never even got any. Heartbroken and dejected, we took one last hopeless (or so I thought) shot at this warehouse-style shoe store that I can’t even remember the name of. Amazingly, they had them and they had my size. So now anytime I am struggling to find a pair of hard-to-get sneaks I think back to me and my Mom not giving up on finding those OG 12s for inspiration.

Branch: Air Force

Rank: E-4-Senior Airman

Hometown: Appomattox, VA

Currently stationed in: Macdill AFB; Tampa, FL

Years in the service: 5

How long have you been collecting sneakers and how many do you have? Since December 08. I currently have 31 pair of J’s.

Top five sneakers of all-time: XI, X, VII, V, XIII

What sneaker started you collecting shoes? The XI/XII Countdown package.

What is the next shoe you plan to grab? True Blue III’s

What is your favorite sneaker in your closet? Space Jam XI

If you had to pick one shoe to represent your military branch, what would it be and why? Cool Grey XI. It matches our ABU’s.

What is the worst part of trying to collect shoes and serve at the same time? DEPLOYMENTS!!! Glad I have the internet and an understanding woman.

Do/did you ever try to work sneakers into your military-assigned attire? No, not yet.

What?s the best part of being in the Armed Forces? Guaranteed pay and free school

Since you?ve been all around the world, what?s your favorite sneaker store? House of Hoops is nice because they get a lot of exclusives. Need to go to Flight Club next time I go to NY.

If you could design a sneaker dedicated to you particular branch, what shoe would you use and how would you create it (colors, materials)? It would definitely be the XI’s. I would probably rock with the cool grey and put the ABU pattern into it.

Do you have any memorable shoe-related stories? I went to Orlando to go to the House of Hoops to get the Black History Month III’s. They sold completely out 2 people before me. So i got 2 pair of the playoff XIII’s. The next week I found the BHM’s on sneakerplay.com and got them too.

Name: Kevin B. Harris AKA Brice

Branch: Air Force

Rank: SSgt (Medically Separated)

Hometown: Memphis, Tn.

Currently stationed in: San Antonio, Tx.

Years in the service: 11

How long have you been collecting sneakers and how many do you have? Since 07 and a little over 100 pairs.

Top five sneakers of all-time: In no particular order: The AJ1, The Air Yeezy, Unkle Dunkle Dunk, Foamposite One, and Nike Flom dunk.

What sneaker started you collecting shoes? 2007 Valentines Day Nike Vandal

What is the next shoe you plan to grab? The Kobe Barcelona (if that’s even remotely possible without being charged raped prices SMH)

What is your favorite sneaker in your closet? Right now, the Swizz Beatz Kamikaze.

If you had to pick one shoe to represent your military branch, what would it be and why? The AF1. Simply because the shoe itself is so iconic and what better way to represent the AF than with a pair of AF1s.

What is the worst part of trying to collect shoes and serve at the same time? For me the hardest part would definitely be getting deployed while a hot new release is about to drop.

Do/did you ever try to work sneakers into your military-assigned attire? Of course. The Gortex camo jackets were always the best to rock with some fly kicks.

What?s the best part of being in the Armed Forces? Seeing the world and the friends that you end up making

Since you?ve been all around the world, what?s your favorite sneaker store? I would have to say Sole Boutique in San Antonio.

If you could design a sneaker dedicated to you particular branch, what shoe would you use and how would you create it (colors, materials)? I would go with the Jordan XX3. I’d incorporate a digitized camo pattern of the current uniforms, but in a Navy and Carolina blue colorway. The AF symbol emblazoned on the tongue and of course the finest leathers and suede to complete the look.

Do you have any memorable shoe-related stories? Just recently drove to Houston to pick up the Swizz Beatz Kamikaze and was lucky enough to b the last person in line and get the last pair ever made.

“I’m Anthony Williams, but friends call me AJay. I consider myself a dedicated Sneakerhead. Right now I’m stationed Incirlik, Turkey and i still find a way to get my sneaks I’m a fan mostly of Jordans and AF1’s. My favorite J’s are 13, 5, 11, and 12’s.”

“My name is William Royce (not my government name but the alter ego). I’m an artist, tattooist, fashion designer, & most of all a sneaker head (200+). I was even copping online during deployments hoping to make it home to wear them. I also design customs for years while in college.”

Name: LaMarcus Martin

Branch: U.S. Navy

Rank: Second Class Petty Officer

Hometown: Dallas

Currently stationed in: Veteran

Years in the service: 10 years

How long have you been collecting sneakers and how many do you have? I have around 100 pairs of kicks and have been collecting all my life, its just with limited space and constantly copping new kicks I stagnate around the 100 mark.

Top five sneakers of all-time: Concord 11s, Bred 11s, Carmine 6s, Royal Foams, and Olympic 6s.

What sneaker started you collecting shoes? L.A. Gear hiking boots (elementary swag).

What is the next shoe you plan to grab? “True Blue” Air Jordan 3

What is your favorite sneaker in your closet? Royal foams

If you had to pick one shoe to represent your military branch, what would it be and why? Lightning 4s because the navy colors are blue/gold and the lightning name is synonymous with the crazy flashing speed of the BLUE ANGEL JETS, and the quick strike swag for their SEAL TEAMS.

What is the worst part of trying to collect shoes and serve at the same time? Always on the go, limited space and maybe on deployment on scheduled days when heat drop at the store.

Do/did you ever try to work sneakers into your military-assigned attire?Definitely. I rocked black Nike boots a couple of times under the radar, w/o my bosses noticing when my combat boots were soaked from training in the rain.

What?s the best part of being in the Armed Forces? I know the typical answer is fighting for freedom, but a very close second is traveling the world!

Since you?ve been all around the world, what?s your favorite sneaker store? I would have to go with this Italian boutique in Milan called “Raffelle’s” they don’t carry athletic sneakers, but the hard to find European sneaks in the U.S. Are easy pickups.

If you could design a sneaker dedicated to you particular branch, what shoe would you use and how would you create it (colors, materials)? I would go all out and use a pair of Christian Louboutin’s made from red calf skin with brown stitching, and a game changing limited release blue bottoms. To pay homage to the Navy, only 1775 (the year the U.S. Navy was born) pairs would be available at select military retailers only for servicemen to purchase. I’m sure this would be a dope collectors item!

Do you have any memorable shoe-related stories? The very first shoe I ever camped out for was the Lebron 8 “South Beach” at my fav store in the U.S. hands down, Snkrs Day! Fast forward to present time and now I call this place my job..success story for any sneakerhead in my opinion.
