Jordan Brand and Jordan Brand athlete and Dallas Wings forward Satou Sabally have refurbished a basketball court in Berlin, Sabally’s hometown, giving a safe space for young girls to hoop and play.

“I’m very interested in the concept of intersectionality,” says Sabally. “As a woman, you have to constantly fight battles that other people never have to think of. Refurbishing the court is a small step in giving marginalized groups like young girls the same chance to play basketball, have fun and stay safe.”

Located in Tempelhofer Feld Park which used to be an airport, the court was designed by fellow Berlin-native Bahar Bambi and blends her signature Turkish patterns with Sabally’s Gambian heritage, tapping into Berlin’s multi-cultural makeup.

“As a kid, I always hung out on the street courts,” says Bambi. “I’ve always admired the competitiveness and team spirit of the game. Watching basketball while I paint is one way I get inspired to create. The dedication and focus that players like Satou bring to the game is motivating to me.”

An ombre of purples and reds makes up the court with Bambi’s Turkish pattern seen on the sidelines as well as the type font on Satou’s name on the baseline. The backboards also feature tints of purple and red with the pattern seen again on the backboard square and border.

The court will also be used for basketball workshops and classes by Jordan Brand and local partners during the summer dedicated to girls from a variety of multicultural backgrounds.
