The quality of cross-training sneakers on the market haven’t been as high as they are right now?since the heyday of Bo Jackson and Ken Griffey, Jr. Not only are the current offerings very friendly to everyday dress, the performance offerings have never been higher. It seems every company is making strides with their performance attributes, so whether you’re gearing up for school sports or just looking for a good all-around sports sneaker, you’re in luck. Working from a few months back up to the newest releases on the market, we’ve assembled this buyer’s guide and broken down each shoe’s performance features.

Scope the list. Order the kicks. Hit the gym.

adidas MEGA Torsion XTH

adidas’ new MEGA Torsion cushioning is essentially an over-sized and revamped version of the classic Torsion system adidas has long utilized. This high-top silhouette owns a forefoot strap to lock down your foot, as well as a sock liner similar to that found on the TS Heat Check. This super-cushioned, lightweight, breathable trainer is available in two colorways at Finish Line.

Like the MEGA Torsion XTH on the page before this, the RSP makes use of adidas’ newer over-sized cushioning system. A mesh upper and low cut will make for a good runner-style cross-trainer, but may sacrifice some ankle support in return. Three different versions are out now at Finish Line. The new Tubes system claims to offer superior cushioning, thanks to its open design. Expect a springy step and a soft landing when running. More importantly,?Kenny Powers is backing it, so you know it’s good!?Grab from 4 colors at Eastbay. Jordan Pre-Game XT

Jordan brand has billed the Pre-Game XT as the first trainer designed specifically for basketball players. With a silhouette that looks similar to a hoops shoe, ankle protection should be optimal, while aggressive traction designs stretch up the midsole walls in preparation of more cross-training oriented motions. Ideally, basketball players can go from on-court drills to the weight room or other surfaces without changing sneakers. The “For the Love of the Game” colorway is available now at Eastbay.

The low top silhouette in the Jordan Training arsenal, the Alpha Trunner is the latest in the Trunner lineup. The single piece design of the upper is designed to flex with your foot while holding securely throughout the motion of a step. Flex grooves in the forefoot borrow a play from Free technology’s book and work to promote flexibility. Finish Line currently has the widest selection of colors. Nike Free TR

While most trainer rely on some form of advanced cushioning system like Max Air or Zoom Air, the Free TR offers minimal padding and maximum flexibility. As more and more athletic trainers push athletes to rely less on footwear cushioning during training and instead learn to run without pronating (rotating the foot with each step), the Free sole is an options that should be considered, especially for those who run considerable distances. Eastbay has a handful of colors available.

Nike Trainer SC 2010

The revamped Air SC Trainer was the second of Nike’s latest performance cross training sneakers to hit shelves. Flywire technology appears on either side of the midfoot, with a Max Air heel providing support. The mesh base has been raved about for both its comfort and support and both Mid and Low cuts are available at Nike Store. The Nike Trainer 1 jump-started Nike’s push in this genre last year and the 1.2 is its successor. With a lockdown forefoot strap, Flywire quarter panel, Free-inspire forefoot and Max Air heel, the 1.2 ?is definitely an improvement. Champs has a number of colorways, including some from the “Legends” Pack. The evolution of this shoe has been lengthy. The original Air Trainer 1 inspired the Trainer 1, which became the Trainer 1.2 and then this model, which owns an upper of Nike’s newest technology, Hyperfuse. This pair will continue to release in various colorways for the coming months, but eight colorways are already available now at Nike Store. The Air Max 2009 lent its sole to the Trainer 1 and a forefoot strap was added for additional security. Only a few colorways have surfaced to date, including the all white pair that introduced to the model. Cushioning will be plentiful, given its Max Air ride. However, the lower cut of the upper combined with the high ride of sole raises your center of gravity when moving laterally. Eastbay has two color-up offerings.

Under Armour’s footwear line may have flown under the radar in sneakerhead crowds prior to the first sightings of Brandon Jennings wearing UA kicks on the court, but the Maryland-based brand is very much the reason brands are re-investing time and energy in the training segment. This shoe owns an aggressive overall design and implements additional cushioning at the heel and forefoot impact points. UA’s Heat Gear fabric is in place on the sock liner to keep your foot dry.
