The annual Setsubun festival in Japan serves as the main inspiration behind Nike‘s special release of the Dunk Low.

Setsubun, also known as the “Bean-Throwing Festival,” is celebrated the day before spring in Japan. During the festival, participants throw handfuls of dry soybeans to scare away demons and evil spirits to promote good fortune.

The silhouette comes covered in a light brown base with khaki and dark brown overlays. Purple appears on the Nike checks, tongues, and lining. Other details include a “demon” embroidered onto the back of the heel followed by a white and brown sole unit. Highlighting pair is artwork from the late Edo period (1840s) by Utagawa Kuniyoshi. The image depicts Kintar, who grows up to become a great demon-slaying warrior.
