Decked Out Females: Taylor Howell

Taylor Howell is a woman who does her own thing. In fact, Howell does what she wants exactly how she wants. The young star of MTV's Washington Heights made a name for herself on the show through her eccentric style. After an impressive and surprising, My 5 sneaker rotation, and as the release of her clothing ling draws near, Snkrs Day asked Taylor to describe her style.

“I throw a jacket on with almost anything. I’d wear this without in the summer.”

“(Air Jordan) 12’s are always necessary.”

“A back necklace is probably the only trend I'll admit to following lately. My outfits are always basic. Jewelry is the only real place I’ll follow trends. Lately, there's been more out of the ordinary jewelry for girls, like belly chains and midi rings, and I think it's amazing. I made this from other necklaces.”

“I like to play with the outfit. To me jewelry is what will dress something up or down. I wear more statement pieces versus more everyday pieces. I have my standard old school name chain and herringbone chain versus chunky necklaces and crazy bracelets.”

“A lot of my jewelry is simple. Depending on if I'm wearing gold or silver jewelry, I wear either my grandmother's engagement ring or my graduation ring everyday.”

"A metallic clutch is also necessary.”

Decked Out Females: Megan Ann Wilson https://www.snkrsday.com/decked-out-females-megan-ann-wilson/ https://www.snkrsday.com/decked-out-females-megan-ann-wilson/#comments Thu, 11 Apr 2013 04:31:00 +0000 https://www.snkrsday.com/?p=286289

You probably know Megan Ann Wilson better as @shegotgame, but there is even more to this brilliant stylist, personal shopper, and writer than a catchy Twitter handle. Wilson has styling credits from athletes, such as former New York Yankees pitcher David Cone, and Phoenix Suns forward Wesley Johnson. With a passion rooted in sports, her unique ability to fuse high fashion and leisure has caused her clientele to grow exponentially with no end in sight. Wilson has a strong voice in sport style, which she has lent to various media outlets (NBC Sports, Yahoo! Sports, etc.), and an undeniable work ethic that has seen her company expand to great heights in less than two years. Her ability to dress others is well documented, but when asked about her personal style, Wilson reveals:

"I'm all about a mix of aesthetics and athletics. I would have to describe my personal style as gully chic (word to Jay-Z). I've always been a tomboy, so my signature style has evolved overtime from skate shoes and skirts into a mixture of sportswear, high fashion and borrowing pieces from the boys; similar to my personal brand. My influences range from early Wu Tang and Dipset to Dries Van Noten and Comme des Garcons. I wear what I love and don't take myself too seriously. Great texture and camouflage makes me swoon, and I'm forever loyal to gold as my metallic of choice.

I'm a shoe person at heart. I often start, and end, an outfit with my footwear. Since I'm short (5'2 and a half), my shoes always change the scale of what I'm wearing, whether it's a pair of wheat Timberlands, Nike Roshe Run Wovens or Barbara Bui snakeskin platforms. In terms of sneakers, I tend to buy retro silhouettes, like Jordans, tech running shoes and the occasional sneaker wedge."

For the second installment of Decked Out Females,we asked Wilson to give us an idea of what one of her "gully chic" outfits would consists of. She presented us with the following:

If you follow me on Twitter, you know I'm a huge basketball geek. I'm partial to Big East teams (RIP), and I love collecting unique NCAA gear. One of my style signatures is mixing sports gear with high-end pieces. So when I found this jersey scavenging a vintage store in Toronto, I had to grab it. I got it for only $5! I have a few friends that have hooped at St. John's, and I'm obsessed with Champion jerseys. The color is great, and it's almost mint condition despite being a screen print.

"I generally hate pants. You will rarely catch me wearing them because I can never find any that fit my short, but curvy stature. I'm so happy these Zara pants fit because I love the combination of texture and zippers. They're like wearing a sexy alligator on my legs. They look great over kicks, Timbs or zipped all the way with a pair of heels."

"The IV's have always been one of my favorite Air Jordan silhouettes, however, I find them really difficult to fit. I usually wear a Grade School size 4.5 in Jordans but the IV's cut into my toe box and heel. I passed on them because I try not to buy kicks unless they fit perfectly. When I was in Ottawa visiting my parents, I tried these on at local streetwear spot NORML, and it turns out I was likely wearing the wrong size in IV's. These are a Grade School size 3. How embarrassing! At least I have my first pair of IVs."

"Big cats are some of my favorite animals. So when I saw these socks at Top Shop, they were a no-brainer. Why wouldn't you want tiger socks?"

"I've had this jacket for over 3 years. The leather has broken in beautifully, and I wear it with all sorts of outfits. It's a great investment piece. The gold studs have gone from trend to style staple. When it comes to my style, it's always leather weather."

"I picked up this toque (what we Canadian's call a beanie) in February from the UNFTD store on West Sunset in Los Angeles. It was chilly out. The UNDFTD toques are made by New Era and are great quality. For only $28, I had to cop one of my own. I don't think Canadian customs was impressed by the "Play Dirty" embroidery."

"The earrings are a $5 vintage find from a vintage shop in Toronto that has taxidermy animals alongside rows of pearls. They have a lion's head and I'm a Leo so I had to get them. The necklace is by Kris Nations. I grabbed it while at Kitson in LA. New York City is my 'real home,' and I'm working on moving there full-time so the necklace serves as a nice reminder to keep working towards my goal. I wish I had gotten the Texas one, too. It's my other favorite state. The Forever 21 gold necklace is a layering piece. I tend to have emotional connections to my items, which means my closets are always overflowing."

"I have a ring fetish and feel naked without something gold on my fingers. I lose jewelry ALL the time, so while I'd love to invest in some pieces (Margiela everything please), it's just not worth it for me. I buy cheap rings from big stores, and hunt at thrift shops for neat pieces I can mix and match to whatever I'm wearing. If you can't tell, I have an addiction to gold."

"I run my business from home most days. So, I spend far too much time working at my computer. What I love about the FuelBand is that it acts as a reminder to get out and be active. I walk or bike everywhere in Toronto, and it's so neat to monitor my activity when I'm out shopping for clients or dancing at the gym. I walked 25km on one day during the Vegas trade shows! I also think the fuel band is fashionable and since it does duel function as a watch, I wear it almost all the time."

"I always have a ton of receipts from buying items for clients and writing things off for my business. It's essential that I stay organized at all times. I bought this before NBA All-Star in Orlando last year. It was my first All-Star as an NBA stylist, and I needed a grown up wallet. I use it every day. The full zipper keeps me from losing essential documents and cards. It also doubles as a clutch since my iPhone 4 fits in it perfectly. I always have my Canadian passport on me just in case. Hopefully I'll be adding a Nexus card and a US work visa or Green Card in my wallet soon!"

"Call me old fashioned, but I think business cards are essential for both branding and communication. Duane Smith, better known as dsicle (on Twitter), a fellow sneaker aficionado and one of my big brothers from another mother, offered to design both my cards and logo. I couldn't be happier with what he came up with. He even hand drew the crocodile a print."

"My name is Megan, and I'm addicted to my iPhone. It's like an appendage. I haven't upgraded to the 5 because I technically don't need it, and this case only fits the 4. It's a rubber case with metal studs screwed in, so if it falls, it never lands on the screen. It's durable, fashionable, a great conversation starter, and a pretty effective weapon if s*** ever goes down."

"I'm a shoe girl rather than a purse girl, but when I saw this bag made of calfskin with croc print, I knew it was for me. The combination of cherry red and exotic skin is just perfection, and since it's vintage, I got it for a steal. It fits my wallet, iPad, iPhone and a few other goodies. It's perfect for running around the city or a dinner out."
