This Saturday, the Air Jordan 8 "Bugs Bunny" will return to the delight of many. An OG colorway, the shoe was worn by Michael Jordan on the NBA hardwood in 1993. Get the basics on the release history and heritage of this AJ8 before they come out in this edition of Everything You Need to Know.

Release History

1993

The Air Jordan 8 launched during the 1992-93 season. Sporting criss-cross straps, a fuzzy tongue, and brush stroke midsole, the White/Black-True Red makeup was the first of three colorways to release.

2003

A decade after its debut, the Air Jordan 8 returned in retro form. Like the original launch, the White/Black-True Red colorway was first, releasing on March 1st, 2003.

2008

The Air Jordan 8 White/Black-True Red released for the third time in 2008 as part of the Countdown Pack series. This installment was paired with a Black/Red makeup of the Air Jordan XV and was somewhat of a slow seller due to recent release, lack of popularity of the XV, and package price tag.

Historical Significance

Coming off his second straight NBA Championship and a gold medal with the Dream Team, it would be easy to argue that Michael Jordan was playing his best team basketball entering the 1992-93 season. To kick off his first three-peat attempt, he'd continue his success in the "Cardinal" colorway of the Air Jordan 7. Like Kobe now, it was not uncommon for MJ to begin a season in a new colorway of last year's model and unveil his new signature around the holidays or All-Star break. In February of 2003, Jordan debuted the AJ8, beginning with the White/Black-True Red colorway and wearing it for the remainder of the regular season. The "Aquas" would be allotted for the All-Star Game, while the "Playoffs" would star in the postseason. Jordan finished the 92-93 regular season with averages just shy of 33 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals a game. The Bulls won 57 games and the Central Division, paving the way for their third consecutive league title.

While Michael Jordan was making baskets in the Air Jordan 8, Bugs Bunny was making jokes in them. The animated rabbit made his commercial debut in the Air Jordan 7 campaign, getting brought back for the AJ8s and later the Space Jam film. Bugs wore the colorway of his nicknamesake in both print and TV ads.
