Jordan Brand is celebrating Mexico and its Independence Day with the Air Jordan 5 “El Grito” colorway.

The Air Jordan 5‘s nickname derives from the iconic El Grito de la Independencia (“Cry/Shout of Independence” — also known as El Grito de Dolores or simply El Grito). From 1521, Spain ruled what is now Mexico and was formerly known as New Spain. At midnight on September 16, 1810, priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang his church bell in Dolores, Mexico (renamed Dolores Hidalgo) and gave the call to arms that marked the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence, which lasted until September 28, 1821. Though Mexico wasn’t free until a decade after the war cry, Hidalgo is referred to as the figure of independence for Mexico.

Every year, Mexico’s president rings the same bell Hidalgo did and recites El Grito from the balcony overlooking the Zócalo (national plaza) at midnight on September 16. During the recitation, the president calls out the names of the fallen heroes who died during the war. El Grito ends with the president shouting “¡Viva México!” three times followed by the Mexican National Anthem.

In tandem with the “El Grito” story, the shoe is a tangible celebration of Mexico’s rich cultura.

“Growing up I had a strong connection to my Mexican roots, and particularly my Oaxacan roots — I would travel with my Familia back to Oaxaca often,” said Jaime Rojas, Lead Designer, Men’s Lifestyle, who helped the Jordan team craft the shoe’s overall story and creative direction from the start. “I got to experience the beautiful traditions, craft, and culture of Mexico, and all these things shaped me as a person and designer. I wanted this shoe to authentically capture those elements that represent Mexico and the things that make us proud of being Mexican.”

“The details make this Jordan 5 unique to Mexico and make it a beautifully crafted shoe — and the first retro inspired by the country,” Rojas added. “I feel such pride in saying that. “It’s a moment that can only happen at this company, where you get to merge craft, sport, and culture on iconic shoes, and connect and collaborate with talented and passionate people to bring amazing projects like this to life.”
